The West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (WAIMM) hosted the 5th conference of its hugely successful WAIMM Students Conference, WSC2024. The WSC2024 was held at Tarkwa, Ghana from the 25th – 27th July 2024. The theme for this year’s conference was “EMPOWERING TOMORROW’S LEADERS – the role of the WAIMM Student Chapter in fostering Innovation, Impact and Inclusion “.
Background:
The WSC is the WAIMM’s official Conference & Education session for the young professionals in the Mining and Petroleum industry.
The WAIMM Students Conference provides the platform for students to strengthen their network base and career development. The WSC is for all students studying earth science and engineering from recognized universities and research institutions looking at pursuing and strengthening their future practice in mining, geology & geoscience, metallurgy & materials, oil & gas, engineering and allied industries..
Objectives:
WSC2024 was focused on addressing issues including best practices, framework and industry regulations, mining and petroleum industry code of ethics, AI, current innovations and technological research in the mining and petroleum industry. The conference also brought together, key speakers from the Mining & Petroleum industries, participants from all the various WAIMM student chapters across Ghana, to discuss new developments, mentorship, technological innovations, and the latest industry trends in operations. The WAIMM Student Conference 2024 was an extraordinary gathering of aspiring professionals and industry leaders in the field of mining and minerals. WSC2024 also presented participants with hands-on approach, mentorship and practical field experiences from industry professionals to enable them appreciate the complete mining, oil & gas cycle and processes. The mine site visits provided the young professionals a practical understanding of the mining industry’s systems and processes as it afforded them the with valuable exposure to industry standards and best practices. The visit also gave the student geoscientists the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, facilitating knowledge sharing and insight. Typically, the mine site visit included exploring operational areas like pits, plant site, core-yards, ROM pads, waste dumps, maintenance departments, and environmental facilities. Students also receive training on health, safety, and environmental protocols relevant to mining.
