Increased Illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey,” has been a major challenge facing the Ghana mining industry in recent years. Like most west African mining communities, the activities of such undocumented mining practices pose a significant challenge to the local communities and greatly impact the environment and the broader economy.
This upcoming WAIMM webinar seeks to provide an overview of the causes of illegal mining in Ghana and provide some practical solutions to address this issue. It addresses some of the common causes including poverty and unemployment, the lack of regulation and enforcement of the mining laws, perceived corruption by the supervisory authorities, local and cultural factors, the long and tedious bureaucratic processes and access in acquiring legal small scale mining licenses and associated permits and above all the demand for gold in the world as a result of the increasing high prices on the world market.
Godwin Armah who is the current General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Small-scale Miners provides practical solutions on how to combat the illegal mining menace in Ghana and by context across the west African subregion from the small-scale mining perspective.
